Nikon D4s vs D4: 14 things you need to know about Nikon's flagship DSLR
Feb 28th 2014, 00:01, by jmeyer

Nikon’s new flagship DSLR, the Nikon D4s offers a number of key improvements over its predecessor. Find out what they are in our Nikon D4s vs D4 comparison.

Nikon D4s vs D4: 14 things you need to know about Nikon's flagship DSLR

The Nikon D4s is Nikon's new flagship pro DSLR. Its all-metal, weather-sealed body and 400,000-shot shutter are designed for professional sports, press and nature photographers and anyone else who needs absolute speed, low-light sensitivity and durability above all else.

We all knew it was coming, thanks to teaser videos and appearances behind glass at shows, but the specifications were secret right up until the moment it was officially announced.

And they have caused some controversy. Those expecting a new sensor will be disappointed. Anyone expecting a radical redesign or a breakthrough technology will have to wait.

Instead, the Nikon D4s is designed for working professionals, not technology-watchers. The list of improvements and enhancements over the Nikon D4 is long, and each one is aimed at photographers who use a camera like this for a living.

Each improvement represents an important percentage gain over the Nikon D4, and this can make the all the difference in a competitive professional environment.

Nikon D4s vs D4: 01 Sensor

Nikon D4s vs D4: 01 Sensor

The Nikon D4s uses the same FX format full-frame 16.2MP CMOS sensor used in the Nikon D4.

Many might have been expecting a 24-megapixel sensor or larger, but this would have compromised the Nikon D4's continuous shooting speed and high ISO performance, both of which are key selling points.

But although the sensor is the same, the image processing system is new, and this has an impact on both the sensitivity and image quality.

SEE MORE: Nikon D5300 vs D5100 vs D5200: 13 key differences you need to know about

Nikon D4s vs D4: 02 Image processor

The Nikon D4s uses Nikon's latest Expeed 4 image processing system, where the Nikon D4 used the older Expeed 3 version.

Expeed 4 provides faster image processing and improved noise control, both of which play a part in two key advances in the D4s: faster continuous shooting and higher ISOs.

Nikon D4s vs D4: 03 ISO range

What is ISO: understanding your camera's sensitivity settings (and the best ways to use them)

The Nikon D4 already offered an exceptional ISO range, but the Nikon D4s goes a full EV step further, with a standard ISO range of 100-25,600, expandable down to ISO 50 and right up to ISO 409,600.

This might seem excessive, but many high-speed sports take place in poor light or indoors, and this high-ISO capability allows the high shutter speeds needed to freeze the action even in these conditions.

And nature photographers often need to shoot at dawn or dusk or even after dark, in light levels where it can be difficult to see even with the naked eye.

To keep noise down and quality high, the Nikon D4s uses localised noise reduction, edge sharpening and tone control.

The high-ISO improvements apply to the movie mode too, which brings '3D' noise reduction to reduce random noise and noise 'flicker'.

16 old pictures of London landmarks… and how they look today
Feb 27th 2014, 16:18, by jmeyer

To mark the launch of the new version of its popular app Streetmuseum, The Museum of London has released 16 old pictures of London which juxtapose the historic views with their present-day perspective

Streetmuseum 2.0 includes more than 100 new locations and pictures of London, ranging from 1868 to 2003, and along with the hidden histories of these locations the app also allows you to order prints of some of these pictures of London directly from the Museum’s website.

The composite pictures of London released with today’s update were all taken by renowned photographers from the late 19th and 20th Centuries, such as Wolf Suschitsky, Henry Grant, Roger Mayne and George Davison Reid.

Their images have been blended with modern pictures from the same locations to show the ways in which they have changed (or haven’t). Locations include Covent Garden, Tower Bridge, Blackfriars, Brick Lane, and new additions such as Richmond and Ealing.

Scroll through the gallery below to see all 16 historical pictures of London.

Click here to download the free Streetmuseum 2.0 app for iPhone.

Cheapside, 1893 + 2014. A street seller of sherbert and water is photographed on Cheapside completely unawares of the camera. Paul Martin was the first photographer to roam around the streets of London with a disguised camera taking candid pictures such as this solely for the purpose of showing ‘life as it is’.

Covent Garden c.1930 + 2014. Street scene at Covent Garden with underground station and horse and cart in the background. George Davison Reid photographed activity in the marketplace from opposite Covent Garden Underground station on Long Acre. A police constable was often needed to control the congestion of the horses and carts and increasing numbers of motorised vehicles. The long established market place was under pressure to move. The congested facilities were described at the time as ‘altogether inadequate to the necessities of the trade’. However, the fruit and vegetable market did not relocate until 1973.

The façade of the building was made from Portland Stone and featured columns and statues however in 1964 it was thought too small and the building was demolished and a larger cinema complex was built in its place.

Charing Cross Road, St. Giles Circus c. 1935 + 2014. Charing Cross Road is renowned for its specialist and second-hand bookshops. The resulting series of photographs are amongst Suschitzky’s most acclaimed work.

Above the station were the premises of Oppenheimer Son and Co Limited, which manufactured pharmaceutical specialities. The Times newspaper was also based here in Queen Victoria Street. A decade or so after Reid photographed this exterior, the station was bombed in the Blitz of 1940 and largely destroyed. The offices of The Times newspaper were also hit.

Construction was by the ‘cut-and-cover’ method used to build the first underground railways before the development of the tunneling shield by James Henry Greathead . The first tunneled, or ‘tube’, railway in London was the City & South London Line, which opened in 1890.

Getty claims it overpaid 9,000 iStock photographers, asks for repayment
Feb 27th 2014, 10:32, by jmeyer

An error in its payment system caused Getty Images to overpay thousands of photographers who sold images on its iStock subsidiary, and now the agency wants photographers to pay them back.

Learn how to use natural light in your landscape photography

Initially thought to affect 25,000 people, Getty says the error affected payments to some 9,000 iStock members during the period of September through October 2013.

These photographers are now being asked to re-pay the difference, which Getty says it will collect in instalments over the next six months.

PetaPixel says it was contacted by an anonymous photographer who has been affected by the situation and was told he needed to-repay more than $900.

He provided PetaPixel with the email he received:

Partner Program Recoupment Notification

Hello XXXXXXXX,

We discovered that there were some irregularities with September 2013 and October 2013 Partner Program royalties payments. There were a number of contributor accounts that were overpaid royalties over these two months. Unfortunately your account was one of the affected accounts.

We have calculated the over payment amount to be $956.66. Rather than take this amount out of your royalty balance in one adjustment we have decided to schedule the removal of these funds over a 6 month period. Starting before the end of February 2014 we will begin removing $159.44. Once per month for the next six months we will recoup the balance of the over payment. You will receive a monthly notification as immediately after the funds are removed.

Over Payment Total=$956.66
Monthly Recoup Amount=$159.44

An update posted to Getty’s website on 24 February states: “Rather than perform one single recoupment we have established a 6-month recoupment schedule. The email we are sending will contain the total amount that will be recouped, as well as the monthly recoupment amount. We will not be providing an individual file breakdown.”

Sentiment on most discussion boards leans toward it being fair for Getty to ask for the money back; however, many believe the agency should provide a breakdown of the sales which were overpaid.

What do you think: is Getty right to reclaim the money? Could the situation have been handled differently? Or have you been affected by Getty’s payment error? Come join the discussion on our Facebook page and let us know!
