10 landscape photography mistakes every photographer makes (and how to fix them)
Jul 9th 2013, 23:01, by anicholson

Landscape photography is one of the most popular photographic subjects and there are superb images everywhere to inspire us. But there are a few pitfalls that can trouble even experienced photographers.

Don't despair, though; our head of testing, Angela Nicholson, has put together a list of the most common landscape photography mistakes every photographer is guilty of at one point or another, and has some great advice to help you avoid any landscape errors in the future.

Landscape Photography Mistake No. 1: Wonky horizons

Some people seem to have a gift for holding a camera level, while others appear have the complete opposite blessing.

Getting the horizon level when you're shooting from an unusual angle is especially tricky, and if you don't get it right you'll have to rotate and crop the image post-capture, especially if there's water in it.

Landscape Photography Tips: 4 ways to ensure a level horizon

While it's easy to rotate an image to level the horizon it means cropping out some of your carefully composed image so it's best to avoid it if you can.

The easiest solution is to use a level to indicate when the camera is on an even keel.

This can be a bubble-level on your tripod or a little spirit-level that slots into your camera's hotshoe.

Alternatively, many cameras now have a digital level built-in that can be displayed in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen.

Check if your camera has one and activate it to banish wonky horizons forever.

Photo Retouching: how to whiten teeth in Photoshop
Jul 9th 2013, 10:00, by jmeyer

As our Raw Tuesday series guide to photo retouching continues we show you how to whiten teeth in Photoshop, as well as straighten teeth, in just three easy steps!

Photo Retouching: how to whiten teeth in Photoshop

People often feel self-conscious about crooked or yellow teeth, but luckily there's an easy fix in Photoshop.

The Liquify filter is the perfect tool for tweaking and tucking shapes, so it's great for straightening teeth. The Clone and Healing tools are also good choices when you need to tidy up chips or remove marks.

For those who like 10 coffees a day, teeth can be cleaned up with a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. This allows you to target and desaturate the yellow tones in your image.

How to straighten and whiten teeth in Photoshop

How to straighten and whiten teeth in Photoshop: step 1

01 Straighten the edges
Hit Cmd/Ctrl+J to duplicate your Background layer, then go to Filter>Liquify to access the Liquify dialog box. Zoom in to the teeth, then use the top left Forward Warp tool to warp the edges of the teeth. Switch to the Reconstruct tool below if you go wrong.

How to straighten and whiten teeth in Photoshop: step 2

02 Whiten the teeth
Click the Create Adjustment Layer icon in the Tools Panel and select Hue/Saturation. Choose Yellow from the Master drop-down menu and knock saturation back to -80. Next, choose Red and set Saturation to -10. Then switch back to Master and set Lightness to +10.

03 Add a Mask
Hit Cmd/Ctrl+I to invert the Hue/Saturation layer's mask, hiding the colour changes. Next, select the Brush tool from the Tools Panel, hit D to reset your foreground colour to white. Finally, paint with a soft-edged brush over the teeth to reveal the colour changes.
