27 incredible photo effects you can create from just one Photoshop menu
Jun 5th 2014, 23:01, by jmeyer

In this quick tutorial we show you some of the special photo effects you can create in Photoshop by mixing different images together using Blend modes.

27 incredible photo effects you can create from just one Photoshop menu

The Blend mode drop-down menu that sits near the top-left corner of the Photoshop Layers panel is a powerful addition to the Photoshop user's toolbox.

By changing the Blend mode of a layer, you can alter the way it interacts with the layers beneath it. This enables you to blend layers for creative effect, such as using an abstract texture to age an image.

The image above was tinted and aged using a Hard Light Blend mode to mix the colours and tones of a rusty metallic texture with a butterfly collage.

We also used the Lighten Blend mode to add a hint of fog to the canal background.

There are 27 Blend modes in total and we've applied each one to the same butterfly layer to show how it mixes the butterfly layer with the texture layer below – read on for a full breakdown of the 27 different effects.

If this has whetted your appetite for learning more about blending modes, make sure you check out our excellent video lesson too:

Amazing photo effects you can create from Blend modes: 1-3

Amazing photo effects you can create from Blend modes: Normal

1. Normal
The default mode shows every pixel on the layer normally, without any blending of the layers. This means that the layers below the butterfly layer have no effect on the butterfly.

Amazing photo effects you can create from Blend modes: Dissolve

2. Dissolve
Mixes translucent pixels from the top layer with colours and tones on the layers below. The butterfly's feathered edge is translucent, so the effect is most noticeable in these areas.

Amazing photo effects you can create from Blend modes: Darken

3. Darken
Lighter pixels on the top layer are replaced by the colours and tones from the layer below, while darker pixels remain unchanged. The darker rust from the layer below shows through.

NEF file types and sizes: what effect do bit depth and compression have on raw files?
Jun 5th 2014, 09:50, by jmeyer

Nikon DSLRs can create more than one type of NEF file. In this quick tutorial our friends at the Nikon magazine N-Photo explain the effect bit depth and compression have on your Nikon raw files.

NEF file types and sizes: what effect do bit depth and compression have on raw files?

All Nikon DSLRs shoot RAW files, or 'NEF' files as Nikon calls them. On Nikon's beginner-orientated DSLRs a NEF is a NEF, and that's it.

On more advanced models you can choose whether your NEFs are compressed, and you can also pick the 'bit depth'.

The higher the bit depth, the wider the range of tones captured, which can make a difference if you edit your images.

Our table shows you which NEF options are available on current Nikon DSLRs, and the effect this has on the file size.

Bit depth and data

Nikon NEF files: bit depth and data explained

JPEG images store eight bits of data, but NEF files capture much more

01 8-bit JPEGs store 256 shades per channel. That's fine, until you start wanting to  heavily manipulate your images.

02 12-bit NEFs capture 4096 shades per channel. This gives much smoother tones.

03 14-bit NEFs capture 16,384 shades per channel, but you often won't be able to see any difference next to 12-bit NEFs.
