Nikon D7100 vs Olympus E-P5: 1. How does the handling compare?

Nikon D7100 vs Olympus E-P5: 1. How does the handling compare?

Nikon D7100
Nikon has used familiar SLR-style controls for the D7100, with a healthy collection of buttons and dials providing quick access to most features.

At 675g/1.5lbs, most users will find that they need to use it two-handed, with the left hand supporting the lens and using the controls on the left.

Olympus E-P5
At 378g the E-P5 feels solid and well-made, but is light enough to be held one-handed.

All the key features can be reached quickly via physical controls, while a switch changes the function of the two main control dials.

In addition, the touchscreen gives a quicker means of controlling the camera.

Olympus wins

Nikon D7100 vs Olympus E-P5: 2. Is there a viewfinder?

Nikon D7100
Yes, the D7100 has an optical pentaprism viewfinder built-in, which covers 100% of the field of view.

In addition, images can be composed on the 8cm/3.2-inch 1,228,800-dot LCD, but this is fixed rather than tilting, and it's not touch-sensitive.

Olympus E-P5
There's no viewfinder built-in, but the VF-4 External Electronic viewfinder is available for around $279/£249 if you can't live without one.

Otherwise images can be composed on the 7.6cm/3-inch 1,037,000-dot touchscreen.

This tilting unit is handy when shooting landscape-format images from high or low angles, and provides another way of controlling the camera.
