With a major retrospective of Charlie Waite’s images now showing in London, it’s a great time to take some tips from this eminent landscape and travel photographer, and try to apply some of the lessons he’s learned during a long career.

"My number one tip for aspiring landscape photographers is that you need total and dedicated commitment to the image that one is making, and you should see the image as a production," Charlie explains.

"Then, try not to produce images that in one's heart one feels insecure about. These images do not turn into anything special if in the first instance one had little confidence in them.

“My third tip is this. Continued tenacity is the only way one can produce images that have parity with one's own standards – which must always be slightly out of reach."

Charlie’s exhibition, Silent Exchange, runs at the Lyttelton Circle Foyer in the National Theatre on London’s South Bank until 20 September.

* Charlie constantly stresses the importance of photo composition, so think carefully about what you allow in your frame, and don’t just apply the rule of thirds in exactly the same way every time.
* Once you have found a style you like, and other people like, stick with it. "The voice you have is the only voice you need," advises Charlie.
* However good you get, don’t assume you will make money from landscape photography by selling through stock agencies. Consider other forms of income, and obviously personal projects can be highly rewarding in a different way.

The results are in and John Quinn has won the Sunset round of Bridgestone's rolling landscape photography competition this summer.

This fifth and final round of the contest drew some stunning entries, but judges were drawn to the rich, warm tones of John's striking shot of Kimmel Bay on the North Wales coast.

John, from Cheshire, is a keen landscape photographer and has been building his skills over the past five years by taking night classes in photography and attending workshops by day.

"This image was taken one November Sunday afternoon when I didn't really expect to get anything special," John recalls.

"But then as the sun began to set the light changed significantly. Eventually the elements converged into this perfect moment where the light reflected off the water and the wet sand on the beach."

Runner-up this is Gary Cox, a professional groundsman from Cirencester. Judges say they loved the atmosphere Cox captured with the setting sunlight casting a warm glow through the mist, and the clouds in the sky setting the perfect backdrop.
