How to sell photos online: 5 tips for getting a million views on Flickr
Apr 6th 2014, 23:01, by jmeyer

As our series on how to sell photos online and in print continues we look at how to get your work seen. Social media success is the 21st century Holy Grail – everyone's looking for it. Here's how one photographer found it…

Pro photographer Dr Elliot McGucken's surfer and model photos and videos taken in Malibu have had over 1,000,000 views on Flickr and YouTube. Here here explains his secrets for getting his work seen by millions.

How to sell photos online: 5 tips for getting a million views on Flickr

01 Seek out your heroes

Photos of amazing people doing incredible things will always sell well, because they're unique. I always get good hits for shots of pro surfers like Kelly Slater, Laird Hamilton, or Lakey Peterson.

02 Pump up the volume

If you want a lot of people to see your work, you've got to have an amazing portfolio. Quality is important, but so is quantity – I've uploaded over 140,000 photos to Flickr and SmugMug.

03 Constantly update your portfolio
People will come back to see what you've shot recently, so I'm constantly adding shots of pro surfers, landscapes and gorgeous models. It seems to be a good combination of subject matter!

04 Learn to live with plagiarism
Lots of my best photos have been used without permission to drive traffic to other sites. Until there's a better rights management systems for people who share their work online, I'll have to see the stealing as a sign of success!

05 Create something of real worth
Rather than focusing on social media, focus on the art and craft of photography, and create beauty that people want to see and share.
