Nikon Prostaff Target EFR 3-9x40 AO Matte Precision Reticle, Black Reviews

SUMMARY: If you shoot at short ranges like me, you should buy this scope! That's because this scope is variable focus, so the target is always in focus, even at 50-75 feet. I bought this scope because of my experience with a different Nikon Prostaff scope (the 3-9 x 40 Prostaff BDC). The other Nikon scope was high quality and a good value, but it did not fit my needs. This one does! This scope is ideal for shooting at short ranges, because it can be focused as close as 10 yards (30 feet). That makes it great for indoor ranges, which are usually 50 to 75 feet (17 to 25 yards). It would also be great for small game hunting (e.g. squirrels or rabbits), which you generally shoot from a short distance (under 100 yards) with a .22 rimfire rifle, not from 300 yards away. POSITIVES: 1) Variable focus means the target is in sharp focus even when zoomed in to maximum magnification. 2) This scope is bright and clear, at any distance, and at any magnification! 3) Easy to zero. My first time using this scope, I fired 3 shots, then moved the knobs the recommended number of clicks (1/2 MOA clicks, or as Nikon says, 1/4 inch at 50 yards), and my next five shots blew out the bulls-eye on the target at 25 yards! 4) The variable magnification is a plus. Zooming to 9x magnification lets you see the bullet holes in the target at 25 yards, even with a .22. 5) Focusing is quick, thanks to the yard markings on the scope. For my 25 yard indoor range, all I do is twist the scope to the marking that says "25", and the target is immediately in sharp focus! 6) I like the "matte precision reticle" (similar to Nikoplex, but with finer lines near the center) much better than the BDC reticle in other Nikon scopes. This matte precision reticle is great for target shooting. 7) Good scope for .22 rimfire rifles and air rifles, as Nikon suggests, since people often shoot .22 rimfire and air rifles at short ranges that need a variable focus scope. 8) Although Nikon recommends this scope for rimfire rifles and air rifles, it seems just as solidly built as its centerfire Prostaff scopes, so I suspect it would hold up to the recoil of larger calibers just as well. However, I've only tried it with .22 WMR (.22 Magnum), so I can't say for sure. NEGATIVES: 1) The eye relief is a bit unforgiving. You have to have your eye in just the right spot (3.6 inches exactly), or you can't see, and if your mount and rings don't allow enough adjustment, you're in trouble. The tube on this scope is long enough for quite a bit of adjustment, but just barely enough for my Ruger 77/22 WMR bolt-action (I had to move the scope all the way back as far as it would go on the Ruger 77/22). 2) The scope is supposed to feature "zero reset turrets", meaning you're SUPPOSED to be able to line up the zeros on the turrets with markings on the scope. However, my scope had no markings on the scope body to align with the zeros! This is a minor issue for me, but I think it's a defect, since it doesn't work as advertised. 3) Minor quibble: some other scope makers offer scopes with lighted reticles that would be better for black bulls-eyes. Although I like this "matte precision reticle" better than the BDC, make sure your target has a colored bulls-eye, not a black bulls-eye, because black on black is hard to see (Nikon's reticle has no illumination). All in all, a great scope for the money.. this is my Nikon Prostaff Target EFR 3-9x40 AO Matte Precision Reticle, Black reviews
